Bioluminescence is a chemical reaction within living organisms that produces light. In the case of the glowing water, tiny marine organisms called dinoflagellates produce light when agitated by movement, such as a paddle in the water or a passing fish

The peak season for dinoflagellate bioluminescence in Florida is typically from June to October. The best viewing conditions are on a dark night with a new moon, as the lack of moonlight allows the natural glow to appear much brighter.

Yes, it is generally safe to touch the water. The light-producing organisms, like dinoflagellates and comb jellies, are not harmful to humans. In fact, interacting with the water by splashing or trailing your hand is a great way to activate the glow and see it up close.

Yes, bioluminescent kayaking is a safe and family-friendly activity. There are tour companies such as BK Adventure that are guided by experienced professionals who prioritize your safety on the water. We provide all necessary safety equipment and instructions before each tour

Photographing bioluminescence can be challenging because the light is often faint. While modern smartphones with low-light or night modes can sometimes capture a glow, a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual settings (long exposure, high ISO, and a wide aperture) and a tripod is often required to get clear, high-quality photos.

The best place to see bioluminescence in Florida is the Space Coast, particularly in the waters of the Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon near Titusville and Cocoa Beach. This area is known for its high concentrations of bioluminescent organisms, making it one of the most reliable locations in the world for this incredible natural light show.
